What is an EDR (Event Data Recorder)?

An EDR (Event Data Recorder) is an electronic system in a vehicle that records crucial driving and crash data. In passenger cars and light commercial vehicles it is typically included in the vehicle’s air-bag control unit. Similar to an aircraft flight data recorder “black box”, the EDR captures all relevant information about the vehicle’s behaviour shortly before, during and after a crash. However unlike an aircraft FDR which continuously records data, an EDR only stores data when a crash event is detected.

What data does an EDR record?

An Event Data Recorder captures a wide variety of technical parameters which are highly relevant in the analysis of traffic accidents. These include, among others:

  • Vehicle speed

  • Brake and accelerator pedal activation

  • Steering angle and vehicle motion

  • Airbag deployment and seat-belt tensioner activation

  • Engine RPM and acceleration values

  • Information about vehicle systems at the moment of impact

The three phases of a crash

Essentially, the data stored in an EDR is divided into three temporal groups:

  • Pre-Crash data: Data recorded before the detected collision. In this period the vehicle is moving into the collision position. It typically covers the 5 seconds before the collision. Some newer EDR systems may include longer pre-crash periods.

  • Event data: Recorded at the moment the crash is detected.

  • Post-Crash data: After the crash, the vehicle moves out of the collision and into its final position. Up to 250 ms of data are recorded; newer systems may cover longer periods.

The EDR contents enable a precise reconstruction of the accident scenario and provide valuable insights for research, manufacturers and insurers.

History and global adoption

The technology of Event Data Recorders originated in the United States. As early as the 1990s American car manufacturers began using EDR systems for crash analysis. Because of their significant value to traffic-safety research, EDR systems spread globally over the years. Today they are standard in many modern vehicles from major manufacturers.

EU EDR mandate since 2024

Since July 2024 the European Union mandates the installation of Event Data Recorders in all newly registered vehicles. This aims to ensure that uniform data for accident research and vehicle-safety systems improvement is available Europe-wide. The EDR obligation since 2024 is a major step to better understand crashes and reduce future risks. It will also lead to a rapidly increasing share of vehicles equipped with an EDR.

Maximum data security and GDPR compliance

Data protection is a top priority for DiagFlight. The system is 100% GDPR-compliant and gives the user full control over their data:

  • The user determines how, where and for how long the data is stored.

  • The entire transmission and storage process is signed multiple times to guarantee the highest level of data security – from reading through to the final report.
Thus DiagFlight ensures that sensitive vehicle data is always protected and traceably processed.

How DiagFlight works

DiagFlight was developed to make reading of EDR (Event Data Recorder) contents as simple, secure and efficient as possible. Thanks to fully automated workflows the system guides the user through a few intuitive steps to reliable and reproducible results – no technical prior knowledge necessary.

Efficiency through automation

With DiagFlight users gain access to accurate EDR-data within minutes. The fully automatic process chain – from vehicle connection through reading to the report – minimises error sources and ensures consistently high data quality.

From plug-in to report in just 2 minutes

1: Connect the DiagFlight Interface (DFI)

The compact DiagFlight Interface (DFI) is simply plugged into the vehicle’s OBD-port. No additional software installation on a PC or smartphone or hardware configuration is required.

2: Automatic online connection and vehicle identification

Once connected the DFI uses its integrated mobile-network modem to establish a secure online connection. The vehicle is identified and the correct protocols and datasets are selected.

3: Automatic reading of EDR-data

DiagFlight automatically reads the relevant vehicle and EDR-data. The user is informed of progress via the display and voice output – of course in their local language.

4: Data transfer to the DiagFlight backend

After successful reading the data is encrypted and transmitted to the DiagFlight backend. There the data is automatically translated and prepared in an understandable format.

5: Secure delivery of results

The prepared EDR-data and analyses are provided to the user via email, the DiagFlight web portal or via APIs (interfaces) directly into existing systems. This allows seamless integration into existing workflows – for example at insurers, appraisers or authorities.

Data security with DiagFlight

From the outset, the development of DiagFlight placed greatest emphasis on data validity, as well as data security and privacy. The entire system – from data collection through transmission to analysis – is designed to guarantee the integrity, authenticity and traceability of all EDR-data at all times.

Data validation

We cooperate closely with numerous vehicle manufacturers from Germany, Europe and worldwide in the development of DiagFlight’s data basis and place the highest priority on the validity of the collected data. Because the raw data from a DiagFlight readout can always be secured, it may also be used for independent validation (e.g., against OEM EDR tools).

DiagFlight has also convinced vehicle manufacturers and is already used by several OEMs as an EDR-readout tool.

Digital signatures and timestamps for maximum integrity

As soon as a DiagFlight Interface (DFI) reads data from a vehicle, it is immediately digitally signed and time-stamped. Every data record is thus uniquely verifiable and protected against tampering.
The data further processed and translated by the DiagFlight backend also receive a distinct digital signature and timestamp. Thus a complete digital chain of evidence is created, traceable from the vehicle to the final report. With its consistent security architecture, DiagFlight offers a unique level of data integrity and traceability. From the first data capture to the final report, every step remains documented, signed and verifiable – for maximum reliability, transparency and legal certainty in the use of EDR contents.

The DiagFlight dataset – traceable and verifiable

All signatures and timestamps are combined in a DiagFlight dataset. This dataset is automatically appended to every report and enables independent verification of data integrity. Through the use of widely recognised cryptographic signature algorithms the authenticity of a DiagFlight dataset can be verified at any time by third-parties – without proprietary software or dependencies.

Secure and data-protection compliant backend systems

The backend systems of DiagFlight meet the highest requirements for data security, data protection and availability. All our systems are operated in ISO- and GDPR-compliant data-centres. Furthermore, the geographical storage of data follows the customer’s requirements. On request, data can be stored exclusively within certain national borders to comply with local data-protection regulations. Thus even particularly sensitive vehicle- and crash-data remains legally compliant at all times.

DiagFlight in action

The following practical example shows how DiagFlight delivers valuable clarity in accident analysis – even in difficult cases where opposing statements and ambiguous damage images exist. Using DiagFlight the vehicle’s Event Data Recorder (EDR) was read. Within a few minutes the relevant data was available.

Initial situation

The vehicle in question was involved in a rear-end collision in a traffic jam and was damaged both front and rear.

There were however conflicting statements on the course of the accident:

  • The driver of the affected vehicle claimed he had braked in time for the traffic jam and did not crash into the vehicle in front. Only because he was struck from behind by a following vehicle was his car pushed into the leading vehicle.

  • The insurer of the striking vehicle, on the other hand, claimed that the victim’s vehicle had already driven into the vehicle ahead and that only the damage at the rear should be compensated.
With front and rear damage the actual sequence was nearly impossible to clarify through mere visual inspection.

Solution via EDR read-out with DiagFlight

Using DiagFlight the vehicle’s Event Data Recorder (EDR) was read. The automatically generated summary clearly showed: The EDR had recorded two separate events:

  • First a rear-end impact

  • Then a front-end impact

Thus it was conclusively proven that the vehicle had been pushed into the leading vehicle – not that it had driven into it under its own power. The question of liability could be resolved objectively.

Objective decision-making based on EDR data

This example demonstrates impressively how DiagFlight helps make crash sequences transparent and resolves disputes objectively. Through the combination of automatic EDR read-out, secure transmission and precise analysis, DiagFlight delivers reliable results – where visual inspection alone reaches its limits.

Integration with msg.IoTA
